Easy Outdoor Science Experiments for Kids
Science Happens Naturally Outdoors
The outdoors is the original laboratory. Every puddle, shadow, and breeze is a science lesson waiting to happen. These experiments use simple materials and produce visible, exciting results.
Physics Experiments
Sundial Time Tracker
Stick a straight branch in the ground. Mark the shadow's tip with a rock every hour. By day's end, you've mapped the sun's path and learned about Earth's rotation.
Water Rocket
Fill a plastic bottle one-third with water. Use a bicycle pump with a cork adapter to pressurize it. Launch it in an open area. Kids learn about pressure and thrust.
Chemistry Experiments
Nature pH Test
Boil red cabbage to make a natural pH indicator. Test rainwater, pond water, soil mixed with water, and lemon juice. Watch colors change from pink (acid) to blue (base).
Solar Oven S'mores
Line a pizza box with aluminum foil. Place graham crackers, chocolate, and marshmallows inside. Prop the lid open toward the sun. In 30-60 minutes, you'll have melted s'mores—and a lesson in solar energy.
Biology Experiments
Leaf Chromatography
Crush green leaves and place them on coffee filter paper. Dip the bottom in rubbing alcohol. Watch as chlorophyll separates into different pigment bands over 30 minutes.
Seed Dispersal Survey
Walk through your yard in old socks. Pull them off and examine what stuck to them. Each seed type reveals a different dispersal strategy—hooks, sticky coatings, or barbs.
