Bike Safety Tips Every Kid Should Know
Before the First Ride
Biking is one of the best outdoor activities for kids, but safety habits need to be taught early and reinforced consistently.
The ABC Quick Check
Teach kids to check their bike before every ride:
- A = Air: Squeeze tires—they should feel firm, not squishy.
- B = Brakes: Squeeze brake levers. The bike should stop immediately.
- C = Chain: The chain should be clean and not make grinding noises.
- Quick = Quick Releases: Make sure wheel and seat quick releases are tight.
Helmet Rules
A helmet should sit level on the head (not tilted back), with the strap forming a V under each ear. Replace after any crash, even if it looks fine.
Road Rules for Kids
- Always ride in the same direction as traffic.
- Use hand signals for turns (left arm out for left, left arm up for right).
- Stop at all stop signs and look both ways.
- Never ride at night without lights and reflectors.
