Simple Engineering Challenges for Kids at Home
Engineering Thinking for Kids
Engineering is about solving problems through design, building, testing, and improving. These challenges use items already in your home.
Structural Engineering
1. Newspaper Tower
Build the tallest free-standing tower using only newspaper and tape. Time limit: 20 minutes. Test with a fan for wind resistance.
2. Bridge Building
Span a gap between two chairs using straws and tape. Add weight with coins until it breaks. Redesign and improve.
3. Earthquake-Proof Building
Build a structure from blocks or LEGO. Place on a tray and shake. Modify to survive increasingly intense earthquakes.
Mechanical Engineering
4. Marble Run
Build a marble track using cardboard tubes, paper, and tape. Get the marble from top to bottom using only gravity.
5. Catapult Design
Build a catapult from popsicle sticks and rubber bands. Test launch distance with different arm lengths and tensions.
6. Balloon-Powered Car
Build a car from a bottle, bottle caps, and straws. Inflate balloon for propulsion. Optimize for distance.
Electrical and Chemical
7. Circuit Challenge
Use a battery, wire, and LED to light a bulb. Add switches and multiple lights. Learn about series and parallel circuits.
8. Water Filter
Build a filter from sand, gravel, charcoal, and cloth. Pour muddy water through. Rate clarity of output.
Design Challenges
9. Parachute Drop
Design parachutes from different materials. Drop from height and time descent. Which material works best?
10. Egg Protection
Design a container to protect a raw egg from a 6-foot drop. Limited materials. Test and iterate.
The Engineering Process
For each challenge, guide kids through: Ask (what's the problem?) โ Imagine (brainstorm solutions) โ Plan (choose and sketch) โ Create (build) โ Test (try it) โ Improve (fix and retest).
