Build a DIY Weather Station With Kids

Hands-On Meteorology

Building a weather station teaches measurement, data collection, and scientific observation. Kids track patterns over time and make predictions based on their own data. These instruments use recycled and inexpensive materials.

Rain Gauge

Cut the top off a clear plastic bottle and invert it as a funnel. Mark measurement lines on the side with a permanent marker. Place outside and record daily rainfall in a weather journal.

Wind Vane

Cut an arrow shape from cardboard and attach to a straw balanced on a pin. Mount on a stick with cardinal directions marked. Kids observe which direction the wind blows from throughout the day.

Thermometer Station

Mount an outdoor thermometer in a shaded, ventilated spot. Record temperatures at the same times each day. Graph weekly patterns and discuss why temperatures change.

Cloud Chart

Print a cloud identification chart and mount it near a window. Kids observe and classify clouds daily, recording types and estimating coverage percentage. This builds pattern recognition skills.

Barometer (Simple)

Stretch a balloon over a jar opening and tape a straw pointer to the center. As air pressure changes, the balloon flexes and the pointer moves. Compare readings with weather forecasts.

Weather Journal

Create a daily log with spaces for temperature, rainfall, wind direction, cloud type, and a weather symbol. After a month of data, kids identify patterns and make predictions about upcoming weather.
