Plant Growth Experiments Kids Can Run
Real Science, Real Results
Plant experiments teach the scientific method better than any worksheet. Kids form hypotheses, control variables, collect data, and draw conclusions โ all while growing something they can see and touch.
Experiment 1: Light vs. Dark
Plant identical bean seeds in two pots. Place one in sunlight, one in a dark closet. Water equally. Measure height every 2 days for 2 weeks. The dark plant will grow taller (etiolation) but be weak and yellow. Discuss why "more growth" doesn't always mean "healthier."
Experiment 2: Water Amount
Three plants: one gets 1/4 cup daily, one gets 1/2 cup, one gets 1 cup. All other conditions identical. After 3 weeks, which is healthiest? Introduce the concept of "too much of a good thing."
Experiment 3: Soil Types
Plant seeds in sand, potting soil, and garden soil. Which germinates fastest? Which grows tallest? Discuss why different plants prefer different soils.
Data Collection Template
Day, height (cm), number of leaves, color (green/yellow/brown), notes. Graph height over time. A line graph makes growth rate visually obvious. Calculate average daily growth rate in the final week.
