Build a DIY Weather Station With Kids

Why Build a Weather Station?

A personal weather station teaches data collection, pattern recognition, and scientific observation. Kids who track weather daily develop graphing skills and learn to make predictions based on evidence.

Station Components

Rain Gauge

Cut the top off a 2-liter bottle, invert it into the bottom half. Mark measurement lines with a permanent marker (use a real ruler: 1cm, 2cm, etc.). Place in an open area away from trees and buildings.

Wind Vane

Cut an arrow shape from cardboard, attach to a straw balanced on a pin stuck in a pencil eraser. Add N/S/E/W labels. The arrow points into the wind.

Wind Speed (Anemometer)

Attach 4 paper cups to crossed straws with a pin through the center. Count rotations in 30 seconds and multiply for RPM. More rotations = stronger wind.

Thermometer Shelter

A thermometer needs shade and airflow. Build a simple louvered box (like a miniature shed) that protects from sun while allowing air circulation.

Data Logging

Create a daily log: date, temperature, rainfall, wind direction, cloud type. After 30 days, graph the data. Look for patterns โ€” does wind direction predict temperature changes?
