Plant Growth Experiment: A Kid's Science Diary
Be a Real Scientist: Design Your Own Experiment
Growing plants is fun, but growing plants as a controlled experiment teaches the scientific method — hypothesis, variables, data collection, and conclusions. This project takes 2-4 weeks and works for ages 5-12.
Experiment Setup
Choose Your Variable to Test
Pick ONE thing to change (independent variable) while keeping everything else the same:
- Amount of water (too much vs. just right vs. too little)
- Light exposure (full sun vs. partial shade vs. dark)
- Soil type (potting mix vs. garden soil vs. sand)
- Water type (tap vs. salt water vs. sugar water)
Materials
- 6 identical small pots
- Same type of seeds (fast-growing: beans, radish, or sunflower)
- Potting soil
- Measuring cup for water
- Ruler for measuring growth
- Notebook for the science diary
Science Diary Template
Each day, record:
- Date and Day #
- Height of each plant (measure from soil to tallest leaf)
- Number of leaves
- Observations: Color, health, any changes
- Sketch: Draw what each plant looks like today
After 2-4 Weeks: Analyze Your Data
- Measure final heights of all plants
- Create a bar graph comparing groups
- Which group grew tallest? Which was healthiest?
- Was your hypothesis correct?
- What would you do differently next time?
