STEM Activities for Preschoolers Ages 3-5

STEM for the Very Young

Preschoolers are natural scientists and engineers. They experiment constantly, asking 'what happens if...' and testing through play. These activities channel that curiosity productively.

Science Activities

1. Sink or Float

Fill a tub with water. Gather items: cork, stone, leaf, toy car, sponge. Predict then test each. Record with drawings.

2. Color Mixing Lab

Primary color paints in cups. Mix to discover secondary colors. Use droppers for fine motor practice and controlled mixing.

3. Baking Soda Fizz

Muffin tin with baking soda. Droppers with colored vinegar. Watch chemical reactions in each cup. Pure magic for little ones.

Technology Activities

4. Pattern Making

Use beads, blocks, or snacks to create patterns: red-blue-red-blue. Ask child to continue. Builds the foundation for coding logic.

5. Robot Programmer

One person is the robot, another gives commands: step forward, turn left, pick up. No deviations from instructions. Teaches precision.

Engineering Activities

6. Block Tower Challenge

How tall can you build before it falls? Count blocks. Try again with different base shapes. Learn about stability.

7. Paper Airplane Fun

Fold simple planes together. Throw and observe. Adjust folds to fly further. Simple aerodynamics through play.

Math Activities

8. Counting Nature Walk

Count specific items on a walk: red things, round things, things that move. Builds one-to-one correspondence in real context.

9. Shape Hunt

Find circles, squares, triangles around the house. Sort found objects by shape. Geometry in everyday life.

10. Sorting Station

Mixed buttons, pasta shapes, or toys. Sort by color, size, type. Then re-sort differently. Multiple classification systems.
