STEM Engineering Challenges for Kids

Build, Test, Improve: The Engineering Cycle

Engineering challenges teach kids to think like engineers: identify a problem, design a solution, test it, and iterate. These challenges use inexpensive materials and work for ages five through twelve.

1. Paper Bridge Challenge

Using only paper and tape, build a bridge that spans 12 inches and holds as many coins as possible. Kids experiment with folding techniques, arch shapes, and support structures to maximize strength.

2. Egg Drop Protector

Design a container that protects a raw egg from a six-foot drop. Materials: straws, cotton balls, cardboard, rubber bands. Test from increasing heights to find the failure point.

3. Marble Run

Build a track that guides a marble from start to finish using cardboard tubes, paper channels, and tape. Add obstacles like loops, jumps, and switches to increase complexity.

4. Straw Tower

Build the tallest freestanding tower using only straws and tape. This challenge teaches about structural stability, base-to-height ratios, and the importance of triangulation in engineering.

5. Wind-Powered Car

Create a small car from a cardboard box, bottle cap wheels, and a sail made from paper or fabric. Test with a fan at different speeds. Modify sail shape and size to maximize distance.

6. Water Filtration System

Layer sand, gravel, charcoal, and coffee filters in a cut plastic bottle. Pour dirty water through and observe how each layer removes different contaminants. Discuss real-world water treatment.
