Teaching Kids Money Basics Before Age 10
Starting Early Pays Off
Children who understand basic money concepts before age 10 develop healthier financial habits as adults. These lessons do not require special curriculum.
Age-Appropriate Milestones
Ages 3-5: Coin Recognition
Teach coin names and relative values through play. A piggy bank makes saving tangible. Play store with real coins and price-tagged toys.
Ages 5-7: Needs vs. Wants
At the grocery store, discuss which items are needs (milk, bread) and which are wants (candy, toys).
Ages 7-9: Earning and Saving
Introduce a small allowance tied to basic chores. Use three jars: Save, Spend, Share.
Ages 9-10: Comparison Shopping
Let kids compare prices on similar items. Discuss unit pricing, sales, and whether brand names justify higher costs.
Practical Activities
- Let them pay the cashier (with your supervision)
- Give them a budget for a birthday gift and let them choose
- Open a savings account and review statements together
- Play board games involving money (Monopoly, Payday)
