Best Building Blocks for Every Age
Blocks Grow With Your Child
Building blocks are one of the few toys that remain relevant from infancy through elementary school. The type of block changes as skills develop, but the core learning value persists. Here is a guide by age group.
Ages 6-12 Months: Soft Blocks
Fabric or foam blocks are safe for mouthing and tossing. Babies learn about texture, cause and effect (blocks fall when dropped), and basic spatial awareness through stacking attempts.
Ages 1-2: Large Wooden Blocks
Chunky wooden blocks with rounded edges suit toddlers who are learning to stack. Start with two or three blocks and celebrate small towers. Natural wood is preferable to painted for this age.
Ages 2-4: Standard Unit Blocks
Classic rectangular, triangular, and cylindrical blocks open up complex building. Children create houses, roads, and enclosures. These blocks teach fractions and geometry through play.
Ages 4-6: LEGO Duplo
Larger interlocking bricks develop fine motor precision. Kids follow simple instructions or build freely. Duplo bridges the gap between stacking blocks and smaller construction toys.
Ages 6-8: Standard LEGO
Smaller bricks enable detailed models and themed sets. Following instructions builds sequencing skills while free-building fosters creativity. Sets with moving parts introduce basic engineering.
Ages 8+: Advanced Construction
Magnetic tiles, K'NEX, and marble runs add complexity. These systems teach structural engineering, gravity, and mechanical principles through increasingly sophisticated builds.
