Why Blocks Are the Perfect Toy
Building blocks are among the oldest and most effective educational toys. They develop spatial reasoning, fine motor skills, mathematical thinking (geometry, symmetry, balance), and creative expression. Research consistently shows that block play correlates with later STEM achievement.
By Age Group
Infants (6-12 months): Soft Blocks
Fabric or foam blocks that are safe for mouthing. Look for high-contrast colors, crinkle textures, and rattles inside. These teach cause-and-effect and grasping.
Toddlers (1-3): Large Wooden Blocks
Unpainted hardwood blocks in basic shapes (cubes, rectangles, arches). Size should be large enough to prevent choking. 20-30 piece sets are sufficient. Avoid plastic at this age โ wooden blocks teach weight and balance better.
Preschool (3-5): Interlocking Blocks
DUPLO-size interlocking blocks. The connection mechanism should be easy enough for small hands. Sets with wheels, doors, and figures expand play possibilities.
Early Elementary (6-8): Standard Building Blocks
Classic interlocking bricks in standard size. Sets of 200-500 pieces allow substantial builds. Include baseplates for stability.
Older Kids (9+): Engineering Sets
Gears, pulleys, and motorized components that build on basic block skills. Look for sets that encourage open-ended building rather than single-model kits.
