Watercolor for Kids: Beginner Techniques Guide
Why Watercolor for Kids
Watercolor is forgiving, portable, and magical. Colors blend in surprising ways, mistakes can be lifted, and it teaches patience.
Basic Supplies
- Student-grade watercolor pan set (12 colors)
- Watercolor paper (140 lb/300 gsm)
- Two jars of water
- Round brushes: #6 and #10
- Paper towels for blotting
5 Beginner Techniques
1. Flat Wash
Wet paper, load brush, paint smooth strokes top to bottom. Practice for even color.
2. Wet-on-Wet
Wet paper first, drop in colors. Watch them blend and bloom organically.
3. Salt Texture
Sprinkle salt on wet paint. As it dries, salt creates starburst patterns.
4. Resist with Crayons
Draw with white crayon, paint over it. The crayon resists watercolor, revealing hidden designs.
5. Straw Blowing
Drop watery paint, blow through a straw for branches and abstract patterns.
