Paper Quilling: Easy Starter Projects
What Is Paper Quilling?
Paper quilling is the art of rolling thin paper strips into coils and shapes, then arranging them into decorative designs. It dates back to the Renaissance but is accessible to children as young as 6 with the right tools.
Getting Started
Materials
- Quilling paper strips (1/8" wide, pre-cut packs available)
- Slotted quilling tool (or a toothpick for beginners)
- White glue (PVA)
- Cardstock base for mounting designs
Basic Shapes
Tight Coil
Roll the strip all the way, glue the end. This is the foundation of all quilling.
Loose Coil
Roll, then release slightly before gluing. The coil expands to a larger circle.
Teardrop
Make a loose coil, then pinch one side to create a point.
Marquise (Eye Shape)
Pinch a loose coil at two opposite points.
Starter Projects
Flower: One tight coil center surrounded by 5-6 teardrop petals. Butterfly: Two marquise shapes for wings, a tight coil for the body. Heart: Two teardrops joined at their points.
Display Ideas
Frame finished pieces, make greeting cards, or create bookmarks. Quilled designs look professional even at beginner level — a big confidence boost for young artists.
