Teach Math Through Cooking With Kids
Why Cooking Is Math in Disguise
Every recipe is a word problem. Measuring cups teach fractions. Doubling a recipe teaches multiplication. Timing introduces elapsed time concepts. Children who cook regularly score higher on applied math assessments.
Math Concepts by Age
Ages 3-5: Counting and Comparing
- Count out 6 blueberries for each bowl
- Which pile has more? Which measuring cup is bigger?
- Fill the cup "half full" โ introduce vocabulary
Ages 6-8: Fractions and Measurement
- Read measurements: "We need 3/4 cup of flour"
- Convert: "The recipe says 1 cup, but we only have a 1/4 cup. How many scoops?"
- Half the recipe: "If we need 2 eggs for the full recipe, how many for half?"
Ages 9-12: Ratios and Proportions
- Double a recipe: calculate all ingredients
- Scale for more people: "This serves 4, but we have 6 guests"
- Cost per serving: total ingredient cost divided by portions
Beginner Recipes for Math Practice
Trail mix (counting, ratios), smoothies (measuring, fractions), cookies (all concepts combined). Start simple and increase complexity as skills grow.
