LEGO Engineering Challenges for Kids (2026)
LEGO bricks are engineering tools disguised as toys. These 20 challenges teach structural engineering, mechanical design, and creative problem-solving — the same skills professional engineers use daily, just at a smaller scale.
Engineering Design Process with LEGO
Each challenge follows the 5-step engineering process:
- Ask: What's the problem? What are the constraints?
- Imagine: Brainstorm possible solutions
- Plan: Sketch or describe your design
- Create: Build your solution
- Improve: Test, identify weaknesses, redesign
20 Challenges by Difficulty
Beginner (Ages 4-7)
- 1. Tallest Tower: Build the tallest freestanding tower. Measure in LEGO bricks. Constraint: must support a minifigure on top.
- 2. Bridge the Gap: Span 8 inches between two books. Constraint: must hold 5 LEGO bricks in the center.
- 3. Animal House: Build a shelter for a toy animal. Must have walls, roof, and a door that opens.
Intermediate (Ages 8-11)
- 4. Catapult: Launch a LEGO brick at least 2 feet. Use rubber bands for tension. Measure and compete for distance.
- 5. Gears and Axles: Build a machine that turns a wheel using at least 3 gears. Bonus: make it change direction.
- 6. Earthquake-Proof Building: Build a 10-brick-tall structure. Shake the table for 10 seconds. If it survives, build higher.
Advanced (Ages 12+)
- 7. Marble Run: Build a track that guides a marble from top to bottom with at least 3 direction changes.
- 8. Drawbridge: Build a bridge that opens and closes using a pulley system. Must span 10 inches.
Testing Methods
| Challenge Type | Test | Measurement |
|---|---|---|
| Structural | Weight test | Coins stacked on center |
| Height | Stability test | Gentle push from side |
| Motion | Distance test | Tape measure from launch point |
| Mechanical | Rotation count | Full turns per input |
