Gravity Experiments That Teach Kids Physics

Making Physics Fun Through Play

Gravity is one of the first forces of nature kids notice. These simple experiments turn that curiosity into real understanding.

Experiment 1: The Drop Race

Hold a heavy book and a sheet of paper at the same height. Ask your child which will hit the ground first. Drop them simultaneously and observe.

Lesson: Gravity pulls everything at the same rate. Air resistance is what makes flat paper fall slower.

Experiment 2: Ramp Racing

Set up cardboard ramps at different angles. Race toy cars down each one and measure how far they travel.

Lesson: Steeper angles mean more gravitational force pulling the car down.

Experiment 3: Water Drop Art

Hold a dropper at different heights above a paper towel. Drop colored water and observe the splash patterns.

Lesson: Higher drops mean more energy when the water hits the surface.

Experiment 4: Pendulum Swing

Tie a weight to string and hang from a table edge. Time 10 swings with short and long strings.

Lesson: Longer pendulums swing slower because gravity has more distance to work with.
