Egg Drop Challenge: Complete STEM Guide
The Engineering Design Process
The egg drop challenge is a perfect introduction to engineering: identify a problem (protect a fragile egg from a fall), brainstorm solutions, build a prototype, test, and iterate. It teaches that failure is data, not defeat.
Physics Concepts
Gravity accelerates the egg downward. Impact force depends on speed and stopping time. Cushioning increases stopping time, reducing force. This is the same principle behind car airbags and running shoes.
Design Strategies
1. Suspension System
Suspend the egg in rubber bands or pantyhose inside a box. The egg never touches the container walls. Energy is absorbed by the elastic material.
2. Crush Zone
Surround the egg with crushable material: cereal, popcorn, cotton balls. These materials deform on impact, absorbing energy that would otherwise crack the shell.
3. Parachute
A trash bag parachute slows the descent, reducing impact speed. Works best from higher drops. Challenge: calculate the minimum parachute area needed.
Testing Protocol
Start low (3 feet) and increase height incrementally. Record each test. If the egg survives, increase the height. The goal is to find the maximum survivable height, not just pass/fail.
