Kitchen Chemistry: Science for Kids
Your Kitchen Is a Lab
Baking soda, vinegar, food coloring, and salt can demonstrate real chemical reactions. These experiments are safe, cheap, and produce visible results that excite kids.
Experiment 1: Volcano Reaction
Baking soda + vinegar = carbon dioxide gas. Add food coloring for visual impact. Discuss acid-base reactions and gas production.
Experiment 2: Red Cabbage pH Indicator
Boil red cabbage, strain the purple liquid. Add lemon juice (turns pink), baking soda (turns blue-green). Test household liquids to classify acids and bases.
Experiment 3: Crystal Growing
Dissolve salt or sugar in hot water until saturated. Suspend a string in the solution. Over days, crystals form. Teaches saturation and crystallization.
