Teaching Gratitude to Young Children
Gratitude Is a Learned Skill
Young children are naturally self-centered — it's developmental, not a character flaw. Gratitude must be modeled and practiced over time.
Daily Practices
- Three Good Things: At dinner or bedtime, each person shares three good things from their day
- Thank-You Notes: Even toddlers can draw a picture to thank someone
- Modeling: Say "thank you" out loud for everyday things — the bus driver, the cook, the sunshine
- Giving: Donate old toys together. Talk about how another child will enjoy them
What Doesn't Work
Forcing "say thank you" creates compliance, not genuine gratitude. Guilt trips ("You should be grateful because...") backfire. Focus on noticing good things, not obligations.
