Setting Boundaries With Toddlers
Why Boundaries Matter for Toddlers
Toddlers crave predictability. Clear boundaries create a sense of safety, even when kids push against them. Without limits, toddlers feel anxious and act out more.
Effective Strategies
- Keep It Simple: "We hold hands in the parking lot" — one clear rule
- State What TO Do: "Walking feet inside" instead of "Don't run"
- Consistent Follow-Through: If you say it, mean it. Empty threats teach kids to ignore you
- Offer Choices: "Red cup or blue cup?" gives control within your boundaries
Handling Pushback
Expect resistance — it's normal and healthy. Stay calm, acknowledge feelings ("You're mad because you want to keep playing"), and hold the boundary with empathy.
