Screen Time Boundaries That Actually Work
The Screen Time Problem
Average kids spend 4–7 hours daily on screens. While not all screen time is bad, unbounded use affects sleep, attention, and physical activity.
Boundaries That Stick
- No-Screen Zones: Bedrooms and the dinner table. This is non-negotiable.
- Screen-Free Times: The first hour after school and the hour before bed.
- Earn Your Screen: Screens come after homework, chores, and outdoor play are done.
- Family Media Plan: Create a written agreement together. Kids who help set rules follow them better.
- Charge Outside Bedrooms: All devices charge in a common area overnight.
What to Replace Screens With
Kids reach for screens when they are bored. Provide alternatives: books, art supplies, building toys, outdoor gear, and board games kept visible and accessible.
The Parent Challenge
Model the behavior you want. If you are on your phone during family time, your kids will be too. Set your own screen-free times and follow them visibly.
