Build a Backyard Agility Course with Pool Noodles
Why Agility Courses Are Great for Kids
Agility courses get children moving, thinking, and problem-solving all at once. Using inexpensive pool noodles and cones, you can create a fun obstacle course right in your backyard.
Materials You Need
- 6-8 pool noodles (foam)
- 10 plastic cones or buckets
- Chalk for marking paths
- Timer for racing
5 Easy Station Ideas
1. Noodle Tunnel
Bend pool noodles into arches and stick the ends into the ground. Kids crawl through a series of 3-4 arches.
2. Cone Weave
Place cones 3 feet apart in a line. Kids zigzag through them as fast as they can.
3. Noodle Limbo
Hold a pool noodle horizontally at decreasing heights. Kids bend backward to pass under it.
4. Jump Zone
Draw chalk circles on the ground. Kids must jump from circle to circle without touching outside.
5. Balance Beam
Lay a pool noodle flat on the ground. Kids walk across it heel-to-toe without stepping off.
Age Recommendations
- Ages 3-5: Keep stations simple, no timer needed
- Ages 6-8: Add a timer, make stations more complex
- Ages 9-12: Add team relay races and creative station design
Safety Tips
Always supervise young children. Clear the area of rocks, sticks, and other hazards. Use soft surfaces like grass when possible.
