Seasonal Crafts for Kids: Fall and Winter Ideas
Crafting With the Seasons
Seasonal crafts connect children to the natural world and its rhythms. Using materials collected outdoors โ leaves, pinecones, acorns, branches โ adds an element of nature exploration to the creative process.
Fall Crafts
Leaf Print Art
Collect colorful fall leaves. Paint the back of each leaf with acrylic paint and press onto paper. The vein patterns create beautiful prints. Arrange into a collage or frame individual prints.
Acorn and Pinecone Animals
Use acorns as bodies and heads. Add pipe cleaner legs, googly eyes, and small leaf wings to create woodland creatures. Pinecones become hedgehogs, turkeys, or Christmas trees with paint and embellishments.
Nature Wreath
Form a ring from a wire hanger or cardboard. Attach dried leaves, small pinecones, acorns, and berries with hot glue or wire. Each season's wreath is unique based on what's available.
Winter Crafts
Snowflake Paper Cutting
Fold paper into triangles (6 or 8 folds). Cut patterns along the edges. Unfold to reveal symmetrical snowflakes. No two are alike โ just like real snowflakes.
Pinecone Bird Feeder
Coat a pinecone in peanut butter (or sunflower butter for allergies). Roll in birdseed. Hang from a tree with string. Watch and sketch the birds that visit โ combining craft with nature observation.
Felt Ornaments
Cut felt into simple shapes (stars, hearts, trees). Sew or glue two pieces together with stuffing inside. Add embroidery details and a hanging loop. Kids as young as 5 can do basic stitching with a blunt needle.
Organization Tips
- Create a seasonal craft bin โ collect natural materials on walks throughout the season
