Seasonal Crafts: Fall & Winter Projects
Crafting with the Seasons
Seasonal crafts connect children to the natural world's rhythms. They use materials that are literally falling from the trees, making them free and infinitely varied.
Fall Crafts
Leaf Printing
Collect leaves with prominent veins. Paint the underside with acrylic paint and press firmly onto paper. Each leaf creates a unique print. Layer colors for overlapping effects.
Acorn Animals
Use acorns as bodies, toothpicks as legs, and small twigs as antlers. Make deer, hedgehogs, and tiny people. Hot glue works best, but tacky glue is safer for young children.
Pumpkin Seed Mosaic
Save and dry pumpkin seeds. Dye them with food coloring in different colors. Glue onto cardboard to create mosaic patterns—flowers, sunsets, or abstract designs.
Winter Crafts
Paper Snowflakes (Beyond the Basic)
Start with a hexagonal fold (fold in half, then thirds, not quarters). Cut geometric patterns along all edges. Unfold to reveal a six-sided snowflake with true radial symmetry.
Pine Cone Bird Feeder
Tie a string to a pine cone. Roll in peanut butter, then roll in birdseed. Hang outside a window and watch which birds visit. Keep a species journal.
Felt Mittens Garland
Cut mitten shapes from felt scraps. Stitch or glue edges together, leaving the top open. Stuff with cotton and string together for a colorful winter garland.
Display and Preserve
Laminate leaf prints for bookmarks. Spray painted pine cones with clear sealant for year-round display. Photograph ephemeral crafts before they deteriorate.
