Paper Mache Projects for Kids: Beginner Ideas

Paper Mache Basics

Paper mache is one of the most versatile and affordable crafts for kids. With newspaper strips and homemade paste, children can create sculptures, masks, piñatas, and decorative objects. The process teaches patience (drying takes time) and rewards creativity.

Homemade Paste Recipes

Flour Paste (Easiest)

Mix 1 part flour with 2 parts water until smooth. Add a pinch of salt to prevent mold. This is the simplest recipe and works for most projects.

Glue Paste (Stronger)

Mix white school glue with water (1:1 ratio). Stronger hold and dries clearer than flour paste. Better for projects that need durability.

Beginner Project Ideas

1. Paper Mache Bowls

Cover a bowl (lined with plastic wrap) with 3-4 layers of paste-dipped newspaper strips. Let dry 24 hours, then pop out. Paint and use as a decorative bowl. Great first project.

2. Animal Masks

Use a paper plate as the base. Cut eye holes, add ears from cardboard, and build features with crumpled paper and tape before applying paper mache layers. Paint when dry.

3. Globe or Planet

Inflate a balloon and cover with strips. After 3-4 layers dry, pop the balloon. Paint as Earth, another planet, or a fantasy world. Add a string to hang.

4. Treasure Box

Cover a small cardboard box with paper mache. Add texture with crumpled foil underneath. Paint and decorate with gems, buttons, or metallic paint.
