Paper Airplane Championship: 8 Designs & Games (2026)
Paper airplanes combine engineering, art, and competition in one cheap, accessible activity. These 8 designs range from beginner gliders to advanced stunt planes, plus complete rules for running a paper airplane championship.
The Science of Paper Airplanes
Every paper airplane demonstrates the four forces of flight:
- Lift: Air flowing over wings pushes the plane up
- Weight: Gravity pulls the plane down
- Thrust: Your throw provides forward motion
- Drag: Air resistance slows the plane
The best designs balance these forces for maximum distance, time, or accuracy.
8 Plane Designs
1. The Classic Dart (Beginner)
The simplest and most reliable design. Fold in half lengthwise, fold top corners to center, fold again to center, fold wings down. Fast and straight. Great for distance competitions.
2. The Glider King (Beginner)
Wide wings for slow, floating flight. Fold in half, fold corners to center once, then fold the tip down 2 inches. Fold wings down from 1 inch below top edge. This plane floats for maximum hang-time competitions.
3. The Boomerang (Intermediate)
Fly up, curve around, and return to the thrower. Add small upward bends to the trailing edges of the wings. The asymmetric lift creates a turning flight path.
4. The Stunt Loop (Advanced)
Designed to perform loops and spirals. Cut small elevators (flaps) on the back of each wing. Bend them up for loops, down for dives, or asymmetrically for barrel rolls.
Championship Events
| Event | Rules | Best Plane |
|---|---|---|
| Distance | 3 throws, best distance wins | Dart |
| Hang Time | 3 throws, longest air time wins | Glider King |
| Accuracy | 5 throws at hula hoop target | Glider or Boomerang |
| Acrobatics | Judged on creativity of maneuvers | Stunt Loop |
