Macrame Projects for Kids: 8 Beginner Patterns
Macrame is having a major revival, and it's perfect for kids. The repetitive knotting builds fine motor skills and patience, while the results โ plant hangers, wall hangings, bracelets โ are genuinely useful and beautiful.
5 Essential Knots
Every macrame project uses combinations of these 5 knots:
| Knot | Difficulty | Use |
|---|---|---|
| Lark's head | Easy | Attaching cord to ring/rod |
| Square knot | Easy | Flat patterns, most projects |
| Half hitch | Medium | Diagonal lines, spirals |
| Gathering knot | Easy | Bundling cords together |
| Berry knot | Medium | Decorative bumps |
8 Projects
1. Friendship Bracelet (Ages 6+, 20 min)
Cut 4 strands of cord (3 feet each). Fold in half, attach to clipboard with lark's head. Alternate square knots down the length. Tie off with a gathering knot. Add beads for decoration.
2. Plant Hanger (Ages 10+, 1 hour)
Cut 8 strands (8 feet each). Attach to ring. Create 4 sets of alternating square knots at 3 levels, then gather all cords with a wrapping knot at the bottom. Place a potted plant in the cradle.
3. Keychain (Ages 8+, 15 min)
2 strands attached to a key ring. Create a spiral of half-hitch knots (always same direction = spiral; alternate = flat). Trim ends and add a bead.
